The District is one of the 26 districts in the Eastern Region with the district capital being Aseswa which is about 45 minutes drive from Koforidua the capital of the Eastern Region.

The District has a population of about 72,092 people. 36,500 of them are males and 35,592 are females. Twelve percent of the population is made up of urban dwellers whilst 87.2% are rural dwellers.

In terms of economic advantages, the district is blessed with the volta river and lake which makes fish farming a very lucrative business in the district. The arable nature of the land in the district has also made crop farming the backbone of the local economy. Almost every crop thrives in the district, from vegetables to tubers, fruits, cereals etc.

The District has major markets whose popularity goes beyound the region t the entire country. The famous Asesewa Market, Akateng and Sekesua markets are well known across the country.

Investment Opportunities

with the presence of the Volta lake in the district and the incredible arable nature of the land, enormous potential abound in aquaculture business as commercial crop farming. Crop farming for instance can be done throughout the whole year. The availability of numerous extraordinary tourist sites in the district makes the tourism industry a very viable one.

Furthermore the opening up of the district since it's establishment in 2008 has made the real estate business a very lucrative venture and any investment in that sector will be worthwhile.

The assembly doors are therefore widely opened to potential investors who wish to take advantage of the abundant economic potentials in the district.

The assembly provides remarkable enabling environment for private businessmen and women to thrive and peacefully pursue their business interests

Infrastructural Development

Since it's establishment, the district has seen massive infrastructural development particularly in the area of educational infrastructural. For example, data at the district directorate of Education estimates that the distance covered by pupils to schools has reduced from 5km in 2009 to 2km in 2013 due to massive infrastructural development in the sector. The giant office complex being constructed solely from the assembly's own resources is in advance stage regardless of the financial difficulties that have militated against the execution of the project.

Currently, many projects are at various levels of completion. These include school buildings, health centre, kitchen facilities for the school feeding programme, supply of furniture to schools, improvement of the Asesewa Market.

Relationship With Development Partners

The upper Manya Krobo District Assembly enjoys outstanding working relationship with Non-governmental Organizations and other development partners operating in the district.

Currently, NGOs like plan-Ghana, The Hunger Project, YOWE etc. as well as UNICEF are enjoying exceptional collaboration and support from the assembly for their programmes and projects.

The major challenges of the district are in the area of:

  • Poor nature of the road network connecting the district capital to the other communities.

  • Low level of internally generated funds

  • High HIV/AIDS prevalence rate

  • Limited employment opportunities

  • Lack of office and residential accommodation for officers of the assembly

  • Low community participation and support for developmental projects and programmes.

Way Forward

To take advantage of the numerous economic potentials that abound in the district, the assembly is pursuing the public-private partnership (ppp) policy to give the opportunity to private business men and women to partner the assembly to develop commercial crop farming and aquaculture businesses as well as develop and market the tourist sites in the district.

The assembly, in a bid to improve revenue mobilization is strengthening the sub-structures of the assembly i.e. the area councils through the provision of offices and equipment as well as building the capacity of the area councilors to enable them contribute to revenue collection in their local areas

The assembly is undertaking public education and sensitization communicable diseases and STDs. The assembly is also collaborating with NGOs working toward the reduction of STDs.

Though more needs to be done, the assembly is unrelenting in it's efforts to develop the district and to alleviate the socio-economic burdens on its people.

All stakeholders interested in joining hands with the Upper Manya Krobo district assembly in the pursuit of socio-economic development of the district are warmly welcomed.
